All of the solo piano pieces that appear on this CD were recorded by Jazz pianist Mark Brandt in one session from start to finish on December 8, 2009. Some of the pieces are like those on Piano Improvisations 1 in the sense that they contain themes which Brandt developed spontaneously during the actual recording session. Others are like those found on Piano Improvisations 2 where melodies and chord changes move much like the traditional standards that jazz musicians improvise over. Whether actually composed or simply sketched, each piece is completely spontaneous to the moment and, as is always the case with Mark's recorded works to date, they are the first and only recorded takes of the songs. Impromptu 3 (track 7) revisits Mark's love for absolute spontaneity and is described in his own words as an improvised work where he simply closed his eyes, touched the keyboard, listened, and followed until the end. Piano Improvisations 3, released by Lionheart Music on February 2, 2010, rounds out a unique and beautiful collection of solo piano music that any lover of piano music will find a welcome home in.
